Clients often ask us for a statement piece. We usually suggest the opposite: a room that is quiet enough for the people in it to become the statement.

Fewer things, chosen well

A quiet room is not an empty room. It has a good chair in the right place, a lamp at the right height and a surface for a cup of tea. What it does not have is anything that competes for attention.

Sound matters as much as sight

Plaster walls, wool rugs and heavy linen curtains absorb sound in a way painted plasterboard never will. A room that sounds soft feels calm before you have noticed anything else about it.

A room for nothing in particular

In almost every home we design, we try to include one room with no fixed purpose: no television, no desk, just a chair by a window. It is invariably the room our clients tell us they use most.
