A sunken living room with a long fire, a dark stone kitchen island and a sculptural plaster staircase

Project No. 02, 2024

Location

Completed

Type
Duplex penthouse
Area
320 m²

Our clients cook every night and entertain most weekends. They wanted the kitchen, the table and the fire in one sightline, with somewhere to sink into once the guests had gone.

We lowered the living area by three steps so the sofa sits below the eye line of anyone standing in the kitchen. The island is a single block of dark Ceppo stone, and the cabinetry behind it is smoked oak without a handle in sight.

The stair was the hardest piece. It is formed in lime plaster over a steel spine, with a concealed line of warm light that follows its edge, so at night it reads as the brightest object in the room without a single visible fitting.
