A stone hall with a still pool and a falling sheet of water, dark timber walls and a dining room facing the hills

Project No. 04, 2023

Casa Água

Arrábida, Portugal

Location
Arrábida, Portugal
Completed
2023
Type
Hillside house
Area
380 m²

Casa Água is cut into a hillside above the Sado estuary. The site is hot and bright, so we designed the house as a sequence of cool, shaded rooms that open to the view only at the end.

You enter beside a still pool fed by a thin sheet of water falling from a slot in the roof. The sound carries through the whole ground floor, and the reflection throws moving light across the stone walls through the afternoon.

The dining room sits at the far end, behind a single pane of glass that frames the hills. The kitchen is tucked to one side in dark timber and marble, so the table is always the brightest place in the house.
